Tailoring is a classic craft, applied to garment construction & made to measure garments. The pattern is drafted from the body to fit perfectly and comfortable, suitably for specific occasions, a kind of uniform based on fit, practicality, status and using quality fabric.
Soft tailoring is the contemporary version of that craft; more emphasis on the ideal body form, shape, proportion and detail of modern fashionable clothes. Designers can develop their own philosophy using new techniques in construction and fabric development.
You will be working for Aquascutum, a company with a long and established English heritage. You will be producing a soft tailored designed outfit ready for Spring/Summer 2012. You should consider the companies’ historical and current signature, and also their clientele. The start of your research must come from one or multiple titles listed below. The titles should allow you to look specifically at minimal yet directional design process, which will not overwhelm a soft tailored look.
Amish
Missing
Incognito
Hero
Bewitched
As you are designing within a formal tailored company, your designs must adhere to classic tailored outfit, such as two piece sleeve, collar, lapel, pocket detailing, jets, welts, consider also cuffs and hem vents. Trousers should be a classic cut, but should seek to include, structured pockets, fly front and waistband, as the brief is for SS12 you should look into short and cropped leg. You must stay within the chosen colour pallet for this project, which are Navy, Black and Grey. Finally all design work should be presented within an A4 portfolio.
